2004 Golf 4 Fun Lessons Along The Front Range

The Denver Group
by Phyllis Bulock

The year 2004 found a total of 50 students enrolled at the Englewood Golf Course for instruction. Forty of these students were returning players and 10 were new enrollees. Our PGA professional instructors Dick Hartman and Bud Jenkins gave over 750 lessons to these 50 students. Dick and Bud have once again graciously accept- ed our invitation to return again with Golf 4 Fun for the 2005 season. A number of our students this past season have been playing the 18-hole regulation courses, while others are discovering the Par 3 and Executive courses. This is a culmination of their confidence level of themselves and the encouragement they have received from the instructors and the many volunteers who help with the program. We have received a number of inquiries about the 2005 season from potential students and family members. We will continue to dis- tribute posters and brochures at area golf courses and rehabilitation centers. However, word of mouth continues to be our best advertise- ment. Thus, we thank all of you who help promote our program to interested individuals. Please contact Phyllis Bulock at the Golf 4 Fun address if you know of anyone who may wish to join our program as a student.

Fort Collins Golf 4 Fun
by Renee Lee, CTRS

The City of Fort Collins Adaptive Recreation Opportunities pro- gram (ARO) had wonderful participation in our Golf 4 Fun spring and summer sessions. We had eight new players, while 12 were return participants. It was great to also have a father and son join us, both having different types of disabilities. We are currently in progress with a par three golf class, which allows people to get out and try their skills on the course. It has been great to see the participants gain skills and confidence in this great leisure pastime. Thanks to Golf 4 Fun for your continued support!
For more information about ARO or for registration information, please contact Renee Lee, CTRS, Fort Collins Recreation Division, at 970-224-6027, or rlee@fcgov.com.

Colorado Springs Golf 4 Fun Program

by Diane Ridderhoff, CTRS

The City of Colorado Springs Therapeutic Recreation Program of- fered a successful five-week session of Golf 4 Fun during Septem- ber/October of 2004. Due to concerns regarding the heat over the past two summers, requests were made for the implementation of a fall class. There was a full class for the fall session, with some alum- ni participating as well as three new participants. Individuals with multiple sclerosis, back injuries, traumatic brain injuries and cere- bral palsy learned and refined their skills with driving, putting and playing some holes at the World Golf Center. Randy Jewell, golf pro- fessional, again provided excellent instruction and adapted the game to meet each person’s needs.

Boulder’s Golf 4 Fun Program

by Cory Lasher-Miller

This summer Golf 4 Fun was offered to a new program called Journeys through EXPAND. Journeys through EXPAND is offered bythe Boulder Parks and Recreation Department serving Adults with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and other similar neurological condi- tions. The lessons were held at Flatirons Golf Course and taught by Doug Cook. Seven golfers participated in the five week program and then scheduled a play day amongst themselves. Play day was an eye opener for the few who had never played the game of golf. One com- ment made on the course was “Gee! now I know why Tiger Woods gets paid so much money. It is because there are so many rules to the game to keep track of!” Another fun day for three of the golfers was to participate in the Pro Leisure Golf Tournament, a fundraiser for the EXPAND Program. However, it got rained out after seven holes. For more information about the Boulder Golf 4 Fun program or the Journeys through EXPAND program, please call Cory Lasher-Miller at 303-413-7269, ext. 1.
